Disclaimer: A thorough dental cleaning under anesthesia, and brushing your dog’s teeth, is considered the “gold standard” by veterinarians for maintaining your pup’s oral health. I am not claiming that there is a direct replacement for that. However, some people don’t brush their dog’s teeth, or choose not to put their dogs under anesthesia (for health or personal reasons), so I wanted to share my experience with an alternate method that is better than doing nothing at all.
A build-up of plaque and tartar can lead to gum disease, missing teeth, and illness. Since doggy dentures aren’t a thing, keeping your pup’s teeth clean and gums healthy is crucial for their overall health and well-being.
Obviously, the best way to get your dog’s teeth clean is to have the vet scrape them while your dog is under anesthesia. This can be very expensive and there are risks associated with anesthesia, so you want to do everything you can to keep your dog’s teeth clean yourself.
Brushing your dog’s teeth every day with a dog-safe toothpaste is the best way to do that, but some dogs hate it and will run from the sight of a toothbrush. Luckily, there are other options that your dog might actually enjoy.
Most of us have taken our dogs to get their teeth cleaned and we know how it can be traumatic to our dogs and expensive. My wife, Mary, and I found a No Anesthesia Dental Clinic through our vet at Four Legged Friends. We took our Flat Coat Retriever, Finnegan, to them and they did a great job in less than 45 minutes and we loaded a non-drugged dog with clean teeth, into the car.
The clinic is Healing Wise Holistic Veterinary Care with Dr. Jacquie Allgire, a certified veterinary acupuncturist. She has appointments available in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Glendale, Chandler, Tempe and Ahwatukee.
The fee is $155 for dogs under 75#, $180 for over 75#. This was a lot cheaper that we have paid in the past.
RAGofAZ’s Vet Team checked out this procedure and found no issues.
I have found there is always something new to learn and wanted to share this alternate. The vet said Finnegan did very well (I wasn’t allowed in the room with him because he might keep looking at me and not relax). When he came out of the back room he was all waggle tail and had sparkling white teeth.
We were very pleased with Finnegan’s clean teeth.
